Maersk, a global leader in logistics and shipping, embarked on an expansion into the logistics sector under its new arm, Maersk Logistics UK. For their UK headquarters, Maersk secured a 600,000ft2 central site at East Midlands Gateway in Derbyshire, and initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art warehouse and office facility. As the chosen interior architect, Woodhouse provided some alternative layouts and design options that would take the workspace to the next level and make it fit for purpose to serve them well for years to come.
The project scope centred around creating a versatile, high-performing space that would serve as both a functional logistics hub and a modern office environment. The design focused on efficiency, flexibility, and a seamless integration of Maersk’s branding and identity. A welcoming second-floor reception is accessible via a link bridge, providing an impressive arrival experience. The open-plan office spaces are equipped with supporting collaboration zones, dedicated meeting rooms for focussed discussions and a private executive suite including a boardroom with stunning view of the area, and the internal restaurant and fully equipped commercial kitchen supports the warehouse and office staff on a daily basis.
Being their new UK headquarters, spaces that would accommodate a large amount of people were needed. A large auditorium to seat 100 with a viewing platform (with accompanying new WC facilities) and LED wall was installed, to facilitate their company training sessions and large conference-style meetings. Furthermore, Woodhouse created a large flexible meeting and collaboration area called the 'Big Ideas Room', designed to foster creative thinking and teamwork.
High quality AV systems and a sophisticated plant deck installation provides the functional infrastructure to support the new space.
The project presented a couple of challenges. The first was that the warehouse remained operational throughout the build, requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption, sectional completions and a phased delivery. Secondly, the design had to maintain aesthetic and functional appeal within a cost-conscious framework, making creating visual interest a challenge.
Sustainability was a key priority for this project, and was designed to a BREEAM Excellent standard. To do this, the design had to incorporate several environmentally conscious materials and construction methods, for example, the complex energy-efficient plant installation, and waste minimisation strategies during the construction phase.
Furthermore, the project was registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, and initiatives including foodbank donations and community engagement efforts were undertaken.
The Maersk Logistics UK headquarters showcases thoughtful design and efficient execution. The facility provides employees with an inspiring environment to work, collaborate, and innovate while maintaining world-class operational standards. With its modern design, integrated branding, and sustainable features, the project will enable Maersk Logistics UK to fulfil their vision of being the global integrator of container logistics.
